Rice is a basic ingredient for a huge variety of dishes! It's grain number one, isn't it? That's why it's very important to know how to cook it perfectly. When I first tried to cook rice without any knowledge about it, I've got something sticky and mushy and it didn't look appetizing, you know. I was a bit disappointed and felt that I need to learn how to cook it in a right way.
It was a long time ago, and I am a little more experienced now. I decided to make some kind of tutorial on how to cook white rice. And today I am going to show you how I do it. I assure you there is nothing diffucult, you just need to know some basic tips and tricks. So, let's start!
To cook rice for 2-3 servings we will need:
- 1 cup rice
- 2 cups water
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Small heavy bottom pan with a lid
For most sorts of rice you will need to measure 1:2 ratio of rice to water. It means you need to use twice as much water as rice. I usually measure half cup of rice for 1 serving and then determine the amount of water. So, if I am going to cook rice for 4 servings, I will take 2 cups of rice and 4 cups of water.
Step 1. Rinse rice before cooking.
First, rinse your rice before cooking. Don't skip this step! Why? Because there is starch on the surface of rice grains and our task is to remove it. The more starchy the rice, the more sticky it's going to be. Other thing you need to know is that short-grain rice is more starchy than its long-grain counterparts. So, keep it in mind when you choose rice in a supermarket.
Place a heavy-bottom pan filled with water on the stove. Add salt and bring to a boil over high heat. After that, reduce heat to minimum.
Heavy-bottom pan is heated evenly and helps to prevent burnt bottoms.
3. Add rice
Stir in the rice, cover the pan with a lid and cook on the lowest heat for 10-12 minutes without lifting the lid. It's really important to retain the steam inside. There is also no need to stir the rice throughout the cooking process.
4. Check the rice for doneness
After 10-12 minutes start checking the rice. If the water is fully absorbed and the rice is tender, remove the pan from the stove. If the rice is good, but the water is still there, just drain the rice.
Cover the pan and set aside for 10 minutes. Afterthat, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.
Congratulations, your rice is ready to be served! Well done! Now you can cook rice like a pro!
Rice can be kept it in the fridge for several (up to 3) days.
Thanks for reading! I am looking forward to your questions and comments.
